Longlevens Women’s Mixed Ability Rugby Team is built on the belief that rugby should be inclusive of everyone, regardless of ability or experience. Our team is grounded in the core ethos of mixed‑ability rugby: celebrating ability, fostering respect, and building a community—on and off the pitch.

Mixed Ability rugby isn’t a separate “disability sport”—it’s a mainstream team environment where women with and without disabilities train and compete side by side as equals. Everyone is welcome, and every player is valued for what they bring to the team, not judged for limitations. Players compete under standard rugby laws with only minor adaptions (like uncontested scrums) but a lot of support and understanding from their teammates, coaches and even the referees!

Mixed ability rugby builds confidence, capability, and respect—qualities that last beyond the game—and emphasises growth over glory. The victories are in inclusion, courage, and participation, not just the scoreboard. It’s about showing up, giving it a go, and being part of something bigger than yourself.

Beyond rugby, mixed‑ability teams become bonded families. They build social confidence through shared experiences, post-match gatherings, and mutual support. Players transition from feeling isolated to being part of a vibrant club community.

Why Longlevens?

At Longlevens RFC, our Women’s Mixed Ability team brings this ethos to Gloucester. We welcome:

  • Women of all ages, experiences, and fitness levels

  • No rugby experience? Come along anyway! Total newbies through to former players are equally welcome

  • A focus on adaptation, not exclusion—so every session and fixture is designed to bring everyone into play

What You’ll Find

  • Supportive and adaptive coaching focused on building skills and confidence

  • A safe, welcoming environment where effort is praised and growth encouraged

  • Flexible training and game experiences, so every player can participate meaningfully

  • Strong social connection, from friendships formed on the pitch to club socials or post-training chats

Who It’s For

This team is for women with disabilities, women without disabilities, and the carers or families who support them. We aim to empower all participants, including those with physical or learning disabilities or mental health challenges, and build a shared sense of belonging in rugby.

Inclusion statement

At Longlevens Women’s Mixed Ability Rugby, we are committed to creating a welcoming, accessible, and inclusive environment where all women—regardless of their disability, background, or experience—can participate, feel valued, and thrive.

We believe that rugby is for everyone and we actively work to remove barriers so that all participants can enjoy and benefit from being part of our team. We welcome players with physical, learning, sensory and mental health needs, and are guided by best practice from England RFU’s neurodiversity support resources and Sense.org’s resources for supporting people with complex needs into physical activity.

We are always happy to:

  • Answer questions in advance of sessions to help ease any uncertainty

  • Meet with players and families/carers beforehand to understand individual needs

  • Make adjustments to coaching and gameplay to support participation and enjoyment

  • Work flexibly so that each player can take part in a way that suits them

We are proud to be part of the Mixed Ability Rugby movement, where inclusion is embedded in the heart of the game, not as a separate session, but as a fully integrated team experience where everyone belongs.

If you or someone you support is interested in joining us, we would love to hear from you. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with any questions, access needs, or ideas—we’ll do everything we can to make you feel welcome and supported.
